As we embark on the new Ohio Detailing Blog Series “Pro Tips for the Amateur” with this first installment, remember that the at-home car-wash project doesn’t have to be lame, laborious, or produce lackluster results… you just need to clean up your methods with the following sublime-shine suggestions from our Department of Cleanology.

Let’s shed-some-shine on how YOU can detail (almost) like the pros with a few tweaks and some guidance to refine your approach and execution when it comes to paint pampering. Eventually we’ll cover the not-so-basics of achieving an immaculate interior as well, including leather and upholstery. Detailing is no different than countless other professional fields of study and applied research, it demands ongoing efforts geared toward perfecting the scientific and contemplative process. Whether you drive a car, pickup truck, SUV or ride a motorcycle we know you’ll gain a new helpful perspective on our wash-and-gloss automotive axioms. So what are we waiting for?

Although it isn't technically "Rocket Science," when you think about it - it is. We're applying a scientific approach using sophisticated chemicals... to Rocket Ships on wheels!

Here’s 2 things to keep in mind as we set sail into this subject:

  1. Washing your car should be an enjoyable and cathartic experience, like a therapeutic exercise in gardening, stacking dominoes, or painting a pretty nature-scapes on a blank canvas (we’ll put a happy little tree – right there). It takes time, commands meditation, and requires a degree of focused fastidiousness to yield optimal reflective results worthy of admiring. Much like arriving at an important business convention as the keynote speaker in a custom tailored suit versus an over-sized adult onesie crunching on potato chips in the last row, it’s irrefutable that you’ll feel and perform better and more confident as you zoom around town in an exquisite shimmer-mobile. Roll your sleeves up, chug a sports drink, and crank up the 1970s rock to eleven!

Sure, detailing is a therapeutic exercise in patience and tenacity... but sometimes you just have to fill up your garage with garage-band music and TURN IT UP TO 11!

  2. Your results won’t be exactly congruent to the results you’ll see in our Ohio Detailing Client Portfolio or photo galleries showcasing before-and-after transformations and highly jeweled glossy paint; much like a paint-by-numbers won’t produce identical results indistinguishable from “The Pabster” Picasso, “Remmy” Rembrandt, or “Vinny-V” Gogh. Don’t get discouraged though, it’s taken us years of nonstop dedication to our craft, countless trials and strategy improvements, and thousands of dollars in equipment and chemical experimentation to procure our talented waxing-wherewithal while earning our stripes. Although you’ll never go toe-to-toe on the hardwood with Michael Jordan, you can learn a thing or three about a jump-shot or fade-away by watching his replays (plus, you can’t actually hire Mr. 23 to play as you – but you can hire us to spit-shine your ride)!

What we do at Ohio Detailing is like dunking from the free throw line! It's never been done before - but as it's being done, you just know something special is unfolding. We're more than a mobile auto-detail business, we're proud professionals that push the boundaries of gloss!

What’s the Difference Between a Car-Wash, and a Detail?

This question has vexed many-a-washer throughout time dating back as far as the late 18th Century (after all, it was the “Age of Enlightenment”) as the origins of today’s modern automobile can be traced to the advent of powered transportation in 1769.

The origins of detailing began as soon as "cars" became a viable invention for personal transportation. After all, a find gentlemen of a certain age cannot sport such a mustache with moxie, if he is not riding around the town-square in a shiny new steamer - HUZZAH!

With this lengthy lineage taking us several centuries into our automobile ancestry, there’s little wonder why the aesthetic upkeep and procedures have become so clouded and convoluted with subjective verbiage and outright misinformation. The odds are even more severely stacked against gaining a keen understanding of what “Detailing” is (and is not) due to several more recent developments in the motoring world where manufacturers intermingle or completely conjure up new phrases, definitions, and standardized phrases. So what’s an enthusiast to do in dark times, such as these?

Although ole’ reliable Webster defines Detailing as a noun and “The process of thoroughly cleaning the interior and exterior of a vehicle and doing minor repairs to improve its appearance,” we believe Merriam left a gaping hole of ambiguity there (plus, we doubt Noah Webster ever had time to wash or wax a car in his day, what with all the dictionary-ing and whatnot). Lastly, to further discredit Noah’s possible insufficient knowledge on the subject, the amount of personal vehicles used between 1748-1843 was anemic at best. So how dare he presume to tell us about what was nothing more than an abstract notion where he was concerned. Shut down!

You won't find the true essence of detailing in these pages - you must undergo the baptizing process yourself. Good try though, Webster!

In short, Merriam’s wordy book has it almost right… but it is also all wrong. We’d hate to leave it at that, just doesn’t feel right. How can something so intense and brimming with passionate enthusiasm be confined into one abruptly succinct sentence? If you’ve ever really set aside a day to spend with your car, truck or motorcycle, you know that what you feel is just as influential in the process as what you’re actually doing.

At Ohio Detailing it is our belief as concisely as we can say that Detailing is an arduous appraisal, streamlined strategy, and exacting execution of artistically aesthetic and affectionate automotive amelioration. This three-step process explains not only the raw mechanical movement of what the word implies, but also expands on its notion as a tangible force of emotional exertion. When you wash a car, you scrub it with some suds hose it off – perhaps then the most suitable way of defining what detailing is would be to simply say it is the opposite of washing.

Since the subject of detailing could be debated without ceasing (and has been) it’s best that we move on to shinier pastures. As we close, it’s of critical importance that the subject of soap is fully addressed.

What type(s) of auto-specific soaps cleanse the best, while doing so safely and leaving behind a glossy refined finish - like on this Ford F-250 Diesel? Well we're not telling! Okay, maybe we will...

What type(s) of auto-specific soaps cleanse the best, while doing so safely and leaving behind a glossy refined finish – like on this Ford F-250 Diesel? Well we’re not telling! Okay, maybe we will…

In the 200-some-odd year span of the powered-transportation age, soap has been like a black plague sweeping across the spectrum of time in both directions. This point is so important because it is the starting point, and the first medium to come into contact with your paint. The precedent has been forever tainted thanks to weekend-warriors relying upon common dish-soaps to perform the heavy lifting during the initial phase of their wayward washing. Dish soap will acutely clean your car, truck, SUV or motorcycle, but will also strip away any and all protective barriers from your exterior such as previous layers of wax . What’s worse is that these soaps are literally formulated to be as aggressive as possible without basically peeling skin from homemakers’ hands, so they will make short-work of drying and pulling the essential elements from your clear-coat that provide that fantastic sheen.

Whoa, look out... Dawn dish soap now has "Active Suds," which means - well, your guess is as good as ours. Baby ducks, not trucks, might benefit from this detergent-heavy scrubbing juggernaut, but paint is a fragile and often finicky finish that calls for the most cautious and caring approach!

Your vehicle will become dull, hazy, and in a word – lifeless. This faulty practice is exaggerated and exacerbated by the fact at-home car wash candidates unfailingly use far too much product in their solutions (and also use water that is either too hard or too soft, as their viscosity modifier) leading to overly acidic and aggressive cleaning. The whole point, much like taking a shower, is to remove contaminants and grime while refreshing and rejuvenating your body (paint) with vitamins and smoothing particulates that nourish, hydrate, and protect your skin (clear-coat). After all, we don’t take showers with pumice rocks, boiling water, and Fluoroantimonic acid… do we? If we did, there would be a bleached ring around what remained of the tub leading into a bottomless pit filled with our atomized remains.

So what soap(s) is/are best, does the pH (potential hydrogen) balance matter, and further more do different vehicles or soil-levels call for varying degrees of certain soaps? Those are ALL fantastic questions, so check back very soon for our Part: 2 of Ohio Detailing’s Tips & Techniques to find out!
